I'd estimate that 20% of the games in my nearly 900-game library are a flavor of that genre, so keep that in mind. With that said, let's move on:Cryptrunner is the latest entry into the rogue-lite shooter genre. I know what you're thinking: "Ugh another one? There are so many of these on Steam!" While this is true, this is a gem in my opinion. As far as I can tell, this is the debut game from developer Fusdev, and you would never guess it because of how polished it is. The gameplay involves exploring procedurally-generated dungeons in a 3rd person perspective filled with chests to open, enemies to kill, items to collect, and weapons to find. The core gameplay loop is very solid. You run around the dungeon killing enemies and collecting items, money, and gear. The combat is fast, frenetic, and satisfying. I loved finding a new weapon and testing it out on a new batch of enemies. Your movement speed seems to be just right, and the controls are very responsive. The enemy variety seems to be pretty good: Ranging from enemies that shoot at you, to enemies that rush at you trying to melee, and enemies that do both. Each enemy's attack is interesting to dodge, especially the ones with bullet-hell aspects to them like the Wizard. This enemy shoots a volley of shots in a shotgun-like spread towards you on the floor that spread out over distance. Each 3 floors you clear, the locale aesthetic changes, the enemies you encounter are harder and more complex, you get better gear, find better weapons, and the proc-gen system creates a larger level than before. Again, it's a fun and satisfying core loop. I never encountered a level in my 3 runs that made it impossible to clear, or had some wierd anomaly in the proc-gen. The system is very well implemented, I dare say one of the best procedural level generation implementations I've seen. Despite being procedurally generated, don't let that make you think the game is boring. The levels it creates are interesting, and varied. None of them seem to be like the other, which is great. I always enjoyed exploring and trying to upgrade my character's offensive capabilties, HP, and weapons.----===TL;DR===---PROS:-Fast, frantic, fun gameplay-Interesting to fight enemies-A good amount of weapons-Graphics and aesthetic are nice. I love the look of billboarded sprites in a 3D game world.-Sound effects are excellent. Punchy bass in some of them, and not repetitive or annoying. -Hitboxes are clear-Relics stack. If you can get 3 relics that increase your fire rate, then your fire rate is increased 3x by the value of that relic. This can make for interesting combinations with high-tier powerful weapons.-The developer in my experience is very friendly and active on the forums. He answered to my thread in minutes.-Very reasonable asking price (at the time of this review) $8. You get a lot for your money.-Getting busted OP is the most fun aspect. You become an unstoppable killing machine, killing enemy after enemy.NEUTRAL:-The map function lacks detail at the time of this review. The developer has stated that it will improve, and that's good to hear. That is why this is not a con.-No save and quit function. I realise a lot of games in this genre don't have that, but on excessively long runs (last one was 80 minutes, and I was forced to kill myself because I had to go do something else) it would be very nice to have indeed.-The melee attack takes some getting used to, and can get you hit if you're not very careful. CONS:-There is not a lot of music. There's the main menu track, the shop track, the boss track, and some atmospheric sound. But besides that, it's quite silent in terms of music. This is understandable because to my understanding, it's only Fusdev working on the game, with another person handling Music.I absolutely recommend Cryptrunner. Its asking price is very reasonable at $8 CDN, and the combat is fast and fun. For such an early state, this is a very fun game indeed. The developer has stated that more Weapons, Items, Enemies, and Locales are planned in future updates. I would personally LOVE to see a rocket launcher type weapon in this game, it would be awesome. The future is bright indeed, so buy this before the price increases when it exits Early Access!. A great little game, already extremely engaging and polished for what it is. Absolutely can't wait to see what it becomes as it's worked on more and more.. Great game, and an amazing early access game. With it being in Alpha, its perfect for what it is.At the time of writing this review, I only have a little over an hour in-game, but I can confidently say that if you love dungeon crawlers, this is the game for you. Very quick to get you into things, no tutorial, and minimal controls. Only taking about 15 seconds after launch (if you know the controls) to start engaging in gameplay.Lots of weapons, relics, and enemies. For $8 (I bought it on sale at $6.80), you are getting exactly what you pay for.If I HAD to make a complaint, it would be the lack of melee relics and melee weapons weapons. At least, by the time I was on floor 10, there wasn't much for the melee side of things; except movement speed for getting closer to your enemies quickly. When you run out of ammo, its a hassle to stay alive. However, you will have fun regardless. Please though, whatever you do, don't tweak a single thing about the movement system in this game. Swinging and strafing to get a quick movement boost makes clearing a floor quick and fun.Seriously recommend this game, a 5\/5 for me.. However with this game, I found it to be a lot of fun right off the bat. Usually I am not one for these types of games but after having the game recommended by a friend, I can comfortably say that I have enjoyed this game. It is a nice simple operation, jump-right-in, type of game-play. You do not have to think too hard and you can simply just play around and have fun exploring. I am excited to see what the developer has in the works for the future of this game
